The 24-hour reply window on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, explained
Why you sometimes cannot reply to a customer on WhatsApp or Messenger, what message templates are, and how to plan follow-ups that stay within Meta's rules.

You open a chat from two days ago, type a friendly follow-up, and the message will not send. On WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram this is not a bug. It is the 24-hour reply window, and once you understand it, it is easy to plan around.
What the 24-hour window is
Meta wants business messages to be welcome, not spam. So when a customer writes to your business, a 24-hour window opens. Inside it you can reply freely, as many times as you need. Every new message from the customer starts the 24 hours again.
When the window closes, what you can send depends on the app.
Inside the window you can send any message: text, photos, documents or voice notes. These replies are free.
Outside the window you can only send a message template. A template is a message you write in advance and submit to Meta for approval, such as:
- "Hi {{name}}, your order {{number}} has been shipped and should arrive by {{date}}."
- "Reminder: your appointment is tomorrow at {{time}}. Reply YES to confirm."
Templates fall into categories such as utility (order and account updates), marketing (offers and announcements) and authentication (one-time codes). Meta charges for templates per message, at rates that depend on the category and the customer's country. When the customer replies to your template, a new 24-hour window opens and you can talk freely again.
Two tips:
- Get templates approved before you need them. Approval is often quick, but not always.
- Keep marketing templates for people who agreed to receive them. Customers who block or report your number can lower your quality rating with Meta.
Messenger and Instagram
Messenger and Instagram also give you 24 hours to reply freely after a customer's message.
After that, Meta allows only a few kinds of messages, sent with a "tag" that says why. The one most businesses use is the human agent tag: it lets a person (not an automated system) reply for up to seven days after the customer's last message, for example to finish solving a problem. Your app needs Meta's approval to use it.
There are no paid templates on Messenger and Instagram as there are on WhatsApp, so plan your follow-ups to happen while the conversation is still open.
How to plan around the window
- Reply fast. Most problems disappear if you answer within the hour. An AI assistant can cover nights and weekends.
- Finish the job in one go. Ask for the address, size and payment method in the same conversation, instead of coming back tomorrow.
- Prepare templates for the follow-ups you know will happen, such as shipping updates, payment reminders and appointment reminders.
- Let customers restart the conversation. End templates with a clear question, so a reply opens a new window.
How SocialChat helps
SocialChat keeps track of each conversation's reply window. On WhatsApp, once the window has closed, it offers your approved templates instead of a free-text reply, so you never type a message that cannot be delivered. You can manage the whole conversation, including the template and the customer's answer, from the same inbox.
Meta updates these rules from time to time, so check Meta's documentation for the current details before planning a large campaign.
